A selection of mini plotlines for students who struggle with ideas for writing descriptions.

Students describe the before and after of a number of universal experiences and scenes:

  • a football match
  • Christmas Day
  • a holiday
  • a successful boxer
  • a forest
  • a storm
  • getting a new car.

The writing tasks get students to contrast a period of happiness, joy or jubilation with a time of despair, deprivation or destruction.

You could use these for collaborative planning, individual pick n mix writing tasks, to practise generating ideas quickly or as prompts for GCSE descriptive writing revision.

Brilliant or building discrete skills within creative writing, which so many KS3/KS4 students lack. Exercises like this are really important for building their confidence in writing. Great! I'll ask students to spidergram ideas / write them on the board, then ask students to share their finished pieces.
