Theme of leadership in 'Lord of the Flies'

This powerpoint introduces the theme of leadership in Lord of the Flies. Students need to have read the first few chapters of the novel, but the lesson would also work well after reading the whole novel. Finishes with a task asking students to design a campaign poster, advertising Ralph, Jack or Piggy as the leader.

Sample content

'Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing.'

  • Do you think Ralph is a good leader?
  • Write down at least two good things Ralph does as a leader.
  • Write down at least two mistakes that Ralph makes as a leader.

I used this resource for a mixed ability Year 10 class. It was actually a lesson I was observed in and it went really well. The class were engaged, it ticked all the boxes and fitted perfectly into a 50 minute lesson.
