A useful collaborative learning or group activity to explore Jane Weir's GCSE English Literature poetry anthology poem, 'Poppies'.

Students work in pairs to explore one aspect of the poem's structure, form and style, then pass their notes on and add to each other's ideas.

An extract from the classroom resource: 

‘The poem takes the form of a dramatic monologue. Yet it is also an elegy or lament, and it is also a narrative, a journey through memory.’ (Jane Weir)

Working in pairs, you will be exploring one aspect of the structure, form or style of the poem by exploring a statement about the poem. Some of you will be exploring aspects of Weir’s comments about the poem. 

  1. The poem is an elegy or lament (a poem of mourning, grief or regret, usually associated with the death of someone).
  • What tense is the poem written in? How does this contribute to the elegiac tone?
  • Some of the symbols and references in the poem are associated with death – make a list of them.
  • Identify any words, phrases, lines or stanzas from the poem that you think are relevant.
  • Write a sentence of analysis (using quotations) to explain your ideas.
