A fun mini-writing project with a science-fiction theme, perfect for new KS3 students and for transition activities. Students imagine they have with a new pen pal, who turns out to be from another planet.  

There are five short, scaffolded writing tasks, with tips to improve students' writing and prompts to get them started with each activity. The writing tasks includes biographical writing, imaginative writing, descriptive writing, diary writing and instruction writing.

This booklet is a mini-writing project. It has lots of ideas for different types of writing and suggestions to help you get started.

As writers, we should try to experiment with different ways of writing and telling tales. 

A good writer:

  • considers why they are writing (the purpose) and who they are writing for (the audience)
  • thinks about how to make their sentences as effective as possible (e.g. short or long; interesting starts and ends to sentences etc.) 
  • uses vivid verbs
  • chooses similes using ‘like’ or ‘as’ to help the reader visualise what they are describing
  • makes sure that they paragraph their ideas carefully
  • checks their work to make sure it makes sense.
