Use the popular John Lewis Christmas advert to support some media and non-fiction activities.
- Watch the 2014 advert. Analyse the advert using the conventional techniques, e.g. soundtrack, types of shot, colours used, overall aims.
- Compare this year’s advert to previous years. How have they changed? (You could think about how they’ve moved from obviously ‘selling’ products to creating more of a ‘story’). You could develop this discussion to think about how advertising campaigns use social media and other methods to raise awareness of their campaign, e.g. Twitter hashtags, Facebook, YouTube.
- Get students to come up with an alternative John Lewis Christmas advert. They could storyboard their advert, think of music and even film something to present to the rest of the class.
