Read the letter that 16 year old Jenni Herd has written to The Times (also printed in The Guardian), expressing her exasperation at how young people are portrayed in the media.

Teaching ideas

  • Have an open and general discussion about whether students agree with her views.  Is there anything they would add to the letter to strengthen the argument?

  • Get students to write their own version of the letter.  How do they think they are unfairly portrayed? Get them to provide real life examples that show they aren’t a ‘typical’ teenager (as portrayed in the press).

  • A letter is a traditional method of communication. Get students thinking about how they would communicate their same message but in a different format, e.g. tweet, blog post, Facebook update. How does the language differ between each medium?
