Use this restaurant review, published in The Telegraph, to explore the author's choice of vocabulary and how it contributes to the effectiveness and impact of the article (AO2).

Teaching ideas:

  • Read the article through, highlighting the words and phrases that help to convey they author's view that the restaurant's food concept is 'affected nonsense'.
  • Get students to choose five of their highlighted words/phrases and explain how effective the words/phrases are at conveying the writer's point of view.
  • Get students to write their own restaurant review. It should be sufficiently 'good' or 'bad' enough that they're able to use words to influence the reader.
