Use this restaurant review to analyse the language used and then get students to write their own.

Teaching ideas.

  • Make a Wordle with an extract of the review. Display the Wordle and ask students if they can guess whether the review is positive or negative.
  • Focusing on the adjectives and descriptive phrases in the review, ask students to summarise the critic's opinion of the restaurant in ten words.

  • Look at the review as a whole. What are the key features that appear, e.g. description of taste, description of decor etc. Come up with a list of three things that are vital to include in a restaurant review.

  • Get students to write their own review of a restaurant or eating place - it could even be the school canteen! It can be positive or negative but should include similar techniques to the article.
