Changing the mood of a 19th-century extract

This resource is designed to encourage students to rewrite a short 19th-century extract, changing the mood and atmosphere. The resource includes some initial comprehension and analysis activities. The extract is taken from Chapter 16 of Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Sample content

6.  Start by rewriting the first paragraph with the words or phrases provided in the box.

pleasant

sunlight broke through the clouds

thrilled

intricate threads of embroidery

anticipation

The way seemed _________ and the streets like __________________. The ___________ became unbearable, and as the _______________, he felt _______________.

7.  Rewrite the second paragraph, replacing the industrial landscape with features of beauty. For example, you might decide that the traveller is looking at a magnificent church or a beautiful park. Replace the barking dog and the screaming seagull with sounds that are soothing or uplifting. If you can, include imagery as the writer has done in his text.
