This simple but effective revision strategy is based on students recalling what they know, before teaching a peer, and then creating a set of revision notes on the topic.

The resource takes students step by step through the process of revising key terms, theories or ideas, in bite-size chunks and in a restricted time-limit. You could allow students to select their own topic from a set list, or distribute topics around the class so that a complete wider topic is covered.

A template for revision cards is also included.

An extract from the resource:

How does it work?

Students learn or revise a small chunk of information, teach a friend, and then make their own revision card.

  • Working in pairs, give each student a different card with a small amount of information (key term and definition, key theory etc), and a two minute time limit to revise the information.
  • When time’s up, ask them to turn their card face down on the desk. Each student has one minute to teach their peer everything they can remember.
  • Without looking at the cards, both students should now write down everything they have learnt, ideally on their own revision cards.
  • When they have finished, they can check each other’s cards, and using a different coloured pen, add anything they haven’t remembered. This will help them to be aware of what they need to revise further.
