Writing fiction: words to dazzle

A synonym matching task to develop students' vocabulary for writing fiction.

Students then practise using the adjectives in their own creative writing and reflect on the ones they consider most effective.

Sample content

1. Match each of the following adjectives with its group of synonyms:

e.g. winsome: pleasing, appealing, captivating, alluring

2. Select the best word to use in the following sentences:

  1. Golden sunshine and autumn leaves – it was a ...................... day for a walk.
