Students write two short letters from the perspective of a rich and poor child from the Victorian period. Would work well alongside the study of any Dickens story at KS3 or as an introduction to Dickens.
Getting into character:
Hetty is a young girl of 9 living in one room with her family in Bow, London. She has been attending a ragged school to learn to read and write for a few years but will now have to leave as her father has died of tuberculosis. She needs to help support her brothers and sisters and has got a job working in a shoe blacking factory. The work consists of long hours, is dirty, hard, and her employer could beat her if she does not meet her quota for the day.
