Rich and poor Victorians - writing in role

Students write two short letters from the perspective of a rich and poor child from the Victorian period. Would work well alongside the study of any Dickens story at KS3 or as an introduction to Dickens.

Sample content

Getting into character:

  1. Hetty is a young girl of 9 living in one room with her family in Bow, London. She has been attending a ragged school to learn to read and write for a few years but will now have to leave as her father has died of tuberculosis. She needs to help support her brothers and sisters and has got a job working in a shoe blacking factory. The work consists of long hours, is dirty, hard, and her employer could beat her if she does not meet her quota for the day.
