Guilt-free planning

Written by David Didau to accompany the article 'Guilt-free planning: tips for training teachers'. This resource gives you practical solutions for effective planning, including some prompts to help you think about:

  • what students will think about
  • Directed Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT)
  • what the 'story' of the lesson is
  • the '1 in 4' rule
  • the problem with progress.

Directed Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT)

Marking is the other albatross hanging around hardworking teachers’ necks. Instead, kill two ill-omened birds with a single stone by making the work you’ve marked the basis of next lesson’s plan. Direct students to spend at least 10-15 minutes acting on feedback to improve their work.

Ask yourself:

What does this student need to do next?            

What task could I give them to provide the opportunity to move on?     

How could I phrase questions to make them think about what to do next?
