A worksheet that lists the ten rules of 'The Detection Club' and then tasks students with identifying whether The Hound of the Baskervilles adheres to the rules. Students are asked to discuss each of the rules and think about why they might have been included, then to give one mark for each rule that they can find evidence of in the text. The rules include 'No supernatural solutions are allowed' and 'The detective may not find any clues that are not passed on to the reader straight away.

It is an interesting concept to get the students into the "detective" mode.

Although this is in The Hound of the Baskerville's collection I use this worksheet as an introduction to any work I am doing on detective fiction.

The thought that there are "rules" followed by great writers of detective fiction is seen as an interesting concept.
