In this resource, teachers asks students to think of a childhood memory that gave them 'troubled pleasure' and then leads into annotating Wordsworth's extract from 'The Prelude'. 

Students annotate by identifying:

  • light and dark imagery
  • imagery linked to nature
  • verbs describing the boy's actions
  • sibilance
  • metaphors and similes
  • elements of the sublime and Gothic horror
  • rhyme.
