Students colour code the opening paragraphs of Chapter 4  of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to help them consider the ways in which Stevenson develops atmosphere and characterisation.

Focusing particularly on the discovery of Carew in the paragraphs provided, students highlight the language of:

  • violence
  • the Gothic
  • emotions
  • innocence/vulnerability.
