I recommend an audio book of this novel from Audible (no commercial interest!) - there are several great versions - both abridged and unabridged - Anton Lesser and one version with several readers including Amanda Redman. I had Dickens ruined for me at school by a teacher with a deadpan voice so if I can find a great version I will use it rather than me - or class members doing it.

I am particularly keen on "hot seating" to explore both characters and themes. I have done this with class members - but it is far more effective if you can find some willing members of staff - or sixth form drama students - anything where you "do" rather than read or write.

Shoe box activity - key words - key incidents - they pick them out - categorise - homework activities include make the cards for this. This is an email homework - I send them an email with the template - they send it back to me. (When I send students emails I always tock the boxes for email read and received. Phone calls follow for those who don't open their emails! I ak them to do the same for me so that they can see how speedy a responder I am to them too.)

(And at the start of every term I collect current contact numbers both students and parents for home phones - mobile phones and email addresses - and very handy they are too. If your students are like mine they use their personal contact numbers and totally ignore the school email system!)
