This resource is intended for year 10 or year 11 to prepare them for writing a formal letter. It could be adapted for use with any literature text and links the two GCSEs effectively. Students usually have an opinion on their text choice!

The resource includes:

  • fictional letter from a parent thanking the teacher for their judicious choice of Frankenstein as the class set text
  • persuasive writing task for a student in role (!) as outraged that the parent feels this way
  • prompt questions and top tips for responding persuasively
  • suggested formal discourse markers
  • some formal sentence openers
  • support for how to address the weak points from the parent's letter.
