Statements to explore

Statements to encourage students to explore Shakespeare's intentions and examine alternative interpretations of the text. Designed for AQA GCSE, but useful to encourage students' exploration of opinions about the text for any exam board.

Sample content

Use the statements below to practise ‘exploring’ and ‘examining’ some key ideas and themes of the play. Use short quotations from the play to support your response to each of the statements.  Remember that you can partly agree or partly disagree …
  • Romeo is a romantic, Juliet is a realist - they would have never worked out.
  • Romeo and Juliet is full of deeply childish ideas about love.
  • Romeo and Juliet is no longer relevant for a modern audience.
