A Poetry Place resource, written by Teachit's poet in residence, Trevor Millum, which encourages students to undertake close language analysis when exploring an unseen poem. Using Herrick's poem 'Delight in Disorder', students group the words into positive, negative and neutral groups before experimenting with tone.

An example task from the resource:

Extension activities

  • Research pictures of male and female dress at the time Herrick was writing.
  • Discuss Herrick’s use of language. Could such a poem be written today? What might feminist response be?
  • Write a modern version about either male or female clothing.
  • Is there a serious point to the poem?
