Activities for chapters 8-13

These activities help students get to grips with the basics of the novel. Students can use the worksheets as a guide for making their own notes or for group work.

These note making activities focus on character, setting, themes, names and style. Teacher notes are also provided.

Suitable to use as preparation for Edexcel English Language and Literature A level: Encounters.

  1. Analyse the literary techniques Forster uses in these key setting quotations.  Then find more evidence about each of the places below:
  1. Windy Corner:

Chapter 8: ‘seemed on the edge of a green magic carpet which hovered in the air above the tremulous world.’

  1. The Sacred Lake:

Chapter 12: ‘waters had flooded the surrounding grass, which showed like a beautiful emerald path’.
