I began with the deictic expression ‘He was sitting right where you are now’ in order to establish the timeframe of the monologue and also to poignantly convey that Krakauer now occupies the place that Alex will never return to.
Although Alex was only with the couple for a ‘couple of hours,’ I qualified this with the subordinate clause ‘but it seemed like a lot longer’ in order to emphasise the indelible impression that he has made upon the speaker.
