As I walked out one evening
A series of activities to help students to understand Auden's use of speech and 'voice' in his poem. 'As I walked out one evening'. Includes a task which asks students to identify Auden's use of direct, indirect, free or reported speech for the lover, the clocks and the narrator, followed by eight questions which look at the theme of time and the setting. There is also a critical evaluation paragraph writing task which could be set for homework, as an extension or for higher attaining students.
