Analysis questions for 'Lamia' (Parts 1 and 2)

1. In which Shakespeare play does King Oberon feature? Who is he and why is it contextually appropriate to include him in the opening of the poem?

2. Who is Hermes? Why is he described as ‘ever-smitten’

3. Why is Crete described as ‘that sacred island’? How might this depict the event as an intrusion?

4. How is Hermes characterised in this section? Choose three examples and explain how they shape meaning.
