20 statements of opinion from leading critics, which can be used for a silent discussion task or as prompts for practice essays. 

Example critical statements:

  • Othello is a play in which evil is condemned and repentance is granted grace. (Jennifer Wallace)
  • Iago is monstrous because, faced with the manifold richness of experience, his only reaction is calculation and the desire to manipulate. (Helen Gardner)
  • It may be Othello’s tragedy, but it is Iago’s play. (Hugh Quarshie)
  • Othello really is, beyond any question, the nobly massive man of action, the captain of men he sees himself as being. (F.R. Leavis).
  • Othello’s tragedy is that he is living the life of a chivalric warrior in a world run by money and self-interest. (Sean McEvoy)
