Freedom to choose? - 'The life story of a Polish sweatshop girl'
An excerpt from a 20th-century non-fiction text taken from The Life Stories of Undistinguished Americans as Told by Themselves. The extract features the plight of a Polish woman who travels to America following the death of her father.
Useful for developing students' confidence in approaching challenging texts. The text is accompanied by a reading task in which students decide whether or not the subject has control over her life.

A great resource for low self-esteem students. it was used as an ice-breaker to compare times from then and today.

Really useful, thank you. I compared it with other (oral) accounts of immigrants and refugees taken from the Truetube website. Students made Venn diagrams to record similarities and differences then wrote up their findings. Writing skills addressed: paragraphing, use of topic sentences, connectives for comparing.
