Man and monster: gothic horror
This resource features a number of activities based on chapters 4 and 5 of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The activities include:
- an annotation task looking at features of Gothic horror in the opening to Chapter 5
- a research task based on Mary Shelley's life
- close-text analysis of the setting described in the opening of Chapter 5
- a quotation and evidence finding task based on Chapter 4
- exploring word connotations
- close-text analysis of the characters and Shelley's intentions in Chapter 5
- an essay plan based on Shelley's representation of Gothic horror in Chapter 5.
The variety of worksheets and activities in this resource make it easily differentiated to suit a number of different learning needs. The activities could be used over a number of lessons.
This resource could be used for introductory tasks on the Gothic horror genre or to support GCSE students with this challenging text.

This is a very useful resource which is easily adapted to a variety of English classes and lessons. Various generic elements cross over.
